Original reddish brown cloth boards with gilt titles. 12mo. xvi +148 pp. Cloth is a little dull with the beginning of splitting along the internal hinges. Otherwise this is a sound copy free from major faults. This is the 'superfine' edition which retailed at 1/- (post fee), the paper covered edition at 2d. Although the preface to the 2nd edition is dated 1892, an illustrated price list included within the text is dated 1906. This is a very important and scarce birth control book. Not only does it advocate and justify Neo-Mathusianism (birth control) but serves as an illustrated catalogue of devices supplied by Holmes by post. See images. Its scarcity is such that Himes was only able to trace a copy in German translation and Fryer could not trace a copy at all. It was subject to legal proceedings on several occasions, including in India. Holmes lived from 1859 to 1938.
