About the Author
Samuel A. Nigro, MD, is a husband of one, father of six, and grandfather of ten. He was born in 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended St. Elizabeth Grade School, Bishop Hogan High School, University of Notre Dame, St. Louis University School of Medicine, graduating in 1961. His internship was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1962 and was offered an Intern of the Year award. He was in the United States Navy Reserve, 1962-1965, where he went to Deep Sea Diving School, submarine medical school, and then was medical officer on the first fleet ballistic missile submarine, the USS George Washington SSBN-598, where his sick bay was alongside and encompassed nuclear missiles 5 and 7. On this ship, he made two ninety-day mostly-submerged war patrols at the peak of the cold war in 1963-64 and was the first physician to earn the Medical Dolphin Medal on a fleet ballistic missile submarine. He then was medical officer for Submarine Squadrons 8, 2, and Development Group 2 in New London, Connecticut, where he provided health care for the crews and families of twenty-eight diesel submarines. He took an adult psychiatric residency at Case Western Reserve University and the University Hospitals of Cleveland, followed by a child psychiatry fellowship, finishing in 1969. In 1969 to 1979, he was a full-time faculty in the Division of Child Psychiatry at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Since 1979 to the present, he has been in full-time private practice of child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry in the greater Cleveland, Ohio, area and is an assistant clinical professor of child psychiatry at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. He practices psychiatry on both the east and west sides of Cleveland and admits patients to St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland.
