Tsunamis and Hurricanes: Effects and Mitigation

A series of enormous ocean waves due to displacement of a large volume of water, generally in seas or oceans, is called a tsunami. There are various causes which are responsible for tsunamis. Some of them are earthquakes, underwater explosions, glacier calvings, landslides, triggered or man-made tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. Tsunami's wavelength is much longer as compared to normal undersea currents and sea waves. Tsunamis and hurricanes are major natural disasters which result in damage of resources along with loss of life and property. A hurricane is a rapid rotating storm system. It is also known as tropical cyclone. Hurricane involves heavy rainfall, rip currents, coastal and inland flooding, and powerful winds. Tsunami warning systems are used to predict tsunamis and issue warnings to public.
