Twelve Clay Tablets (Instructor Edition): A Structural History of Mesopotamia in Twelve Poems

Twelve Clay Tablets: Instructor Edition is a collection of twelve structurally composed poems based on systems central to ancient Mesopotamian civilization, including irrigation, measurement, trade, debt, and early legal practices.

Each poem is constructed using a one-to-one correspondence between textual elements and the system it represents. Rather than relying on metaphor or narrative, the poems present aligned structures through which readers can engage directly with historical processes such as water control, standardized exchange, and the development of law.

The instructor edition includes expanded commentary, system breakdowns, and discussion prompts designed to support classroom instruction. Each section provides clear guidance for identifying how meaning is built through form, compression, and structural relationships, offering teachers practical tools for lesson planning and student analysis.

Suitable for secondary and introductory postsecondary courses in history, literature, and interdisciplinary study, this volume presents a structured approach to poetry that emphasizes clarity, alignment, and system-based understanding.
