Two Discourses Preached Before The University Of Cambridge. July 1, 1810: And A Sermon Preached Before The Society For Missions To Africa And The East by Claudius Buchanan is a pair of sermons delivered in 1810 that frame Christian illumination as a threefold historical progression. The work also includes the extended section Christian Researches Asia, which surveys the state of Christianity and the dissemination of Scripture in Asia, with detailed notes on translation projects and missionary activity. The sermons argue that spiritual light surpasses natural light, outlining three eras: the original promulgation of the Gospel by Christ, the Reformation, and the present era of renewed Protestant energy. They urge the University to promote Bible translations and a broader missionary enterprise, propose the need for an Ecclesiastical Establishment in British India, and stress the importance of knowledge of original languages for biblical scholarship. The accompanying Christian Researches Asia provides a sweeping itinerary of Asian Christian communities, translations, and the geopolitical and religious challenges of spreading the Gospel.
