Two Dissertations on Sacrifices, Tr., With Additional Notes, by J. Allen

Two Dissertations On Sacrifices, Tr., With Additional Notes, By J. Allen by William Outram. This work, translated from the Latin, presents two dissertations on the subject of sacrifices. The first discusses all the Jewish sacrifices and includes remarks on sacrifices of other nations, aiming to defend the doctrine of atonement by sacrifice and to compare Jewish rites with Gentile practices. The second Dissertation treats of the Christian sacrifice of Christ, arguing that Christ’s death is a piacular, vicarious offering prefigured by the Mosaic sacrifices and designed to procure forgiveness of sins and a share in eternal life. The Translator’s Preface explains the historical context, emphasizes the importance of the doctrine of atonement, and defends the general argument against Socinian views. The Introduction outlines the scope, method, and key doctrinal positions. The body then surveys the origin and nature of sacrifices, the tabernacle and temple, the Aaronic priesthood, the types of sacrifices, and the way in which Christ’s life, death, and heavenly intercession fulfill and surpass the Mosaic rites. It closes with testimonies from Christian Fathers and Jewish authorities.
