Mark two centuries of a New England church with this reflective historical sermon and its look at faith, liberty, and community.
This edition reprints a sermon given at the close of the First Church’s second century, exploring how early settlers forged a community built on faith, discipline, and perseverance. It traces the shift from harsh beliefs and the early entanglement of church and state to a broader view of liberty, conscience, and civic life. The speaker weighs past struggles against present privileges, inviting readers to consider what has been learned and what still matters for church and society.
- How early Puritan ideals shaped education, town life, and religious practice.
- How views on toleration and civil authority evolved over time.
- Examples of resilience, sacrifice, and disciplined faith in a difficult frontier era.
- A perspective on the balance between tradition and reform in America’s religious heritage.
