I can bring a great influence to support them, and they support me.") The letters provide a noteworthy glimpse into the early days of California's statehood, as Jones, one of the key figures involved in shaping the state's constitution, wrote about the challenges facing the new state, debates and discussions that occurred during the convention and the general political climate. Also includes two appendices: "Death of Judge Jones," "Published at Plaquemine, La. Saturday January 24, 1852" and "Letter of Governor Peter Burnett," "In justice to the memory of the late gifted and accomplished young Judge," January 1, 1852. An important reference work on a noted politician during California's early statehood.
