In "Two Letters On The Savage State, Addressed To The Late Lord Kaims," David Doig engages with contemporary Enlightenment debates about the nature of â€~savagery' and social progress. Written as a direct response to the theories of Lord Kames, a prominent Scottish philosopher and judge, Doig's letters offer a critical perspective on the concept of the â€~savage state' of humanity.

This work contributes to the historical understanding of 18th-century social and philosophical thought, particularly concerning anthropology and the development of human societies. Doig's arguments provide valuable insights into the intellectual currents that shaped early social sciences and continue to resonate with modern discussions about cultural evolution and the definition of civilization.
