Two Sermons On The Death Of Rev. Ezra Ripley, D.D.: One Preached At The Funeral By Rev. Barzillai Frost, Of Concord, The Other On The Following Sabbath By Rev. Convers Francis presents a pair of memorial sermons for Ezra Ripley, a long-serving Concord pastor. Frost's funeral discourse portrays Ripley's life, character, and ministry, charting his early years, Harvard education, ordination, and decades of pastoral leadership, with emphasis on self-improvement, temperance, education, and compassionate pastoral care. It outlines Ripley's practical preaching, his reliance on scripture and reason, and his devotion to the spiritual prosperity of his parish, as well as his generosity and orderliness. Francis's sermon, The Death of the Aged, places Ripley's death in biblical perspective, drawing on Abraham to reflect on aging, virtue, and the enduring testimony of a life of faith. Together the sermons celebrate a patriarch of Concord, praising a man of integrity, pulpit practicality, unwavering faith, and public virtue, whose life bridged the old Puritan past and the early American present.
