Synopsis
“Two Souls in the Sun: A Twisted Love Story” is a beautifully described journey into a strange and foreign land in a forgotten time. It is the tale of a lonely young officer, isolated in the vast Libyan desert of almost 100 years ago, as he descends into insanity while grappling with his love for a beautiful and exotic girl. This gut-wrenching drama reveals the toll isolation takes on the human mind and spirit, and the dark and deadly twists of a love that turns into obsession. But is the young soldier’s love real or is it a creation of his mind? Where does the line exist between reality and fantasy, beauty and horror, love and hate? It is up to the reader to decide. The author, Giacomo Fatuzzo, like the protagonist in his novel, was a young Italian officer posted to a remote location in Italian Libya in the 1920s. He wrote and published this novel in Libya, in Italian, in 1929. And then the book was lost in the sands of time and war. Ennio Fatuzzo, Giacomo’s son, has translated this timeless story into English to share the moving drama with modern day readers.
About the Author
Giacomo Fatuzzo was born in Vittoria, Sicily in 1900. Although he was a serious student and excelled scholastically, his family could not afford to send him to college. As did many in his situation, he chose a military education as the best alternative. After graduating from the Italian Military Academy of Modena, he joined the Italian Army and became a career military officer. His long and distinguished military career culminated with his appointment as General of the Italian Army Corp. As a young military officer, his first overseas posting was to Libya, then an Italian colony. He was stationed there from the late 1920's to the mid 1930's. While there he saw action as part of the Italian East Africa Campaign (Southern front). However much of his time in Libya involved lonely assignments exploring isolated areas in the interior of Tripolitania. And he became fascinated with the desert and Arab culture. As part of his duties he created and published numerous detailed maps of the area. But he also found time to write a novel - a story of love, hate, and obsession in and with the desert. He called his book Due anime nel sole: romanzo coloniale. It was published in 1929 in Tripoli, Libya and soon forgotten. After his return to Italy in 1937 he was assigned to army headquarters in Rome. He was again called to action in the Italian war against Greece (1939-1940). He served in Albania as the commanding officer of the Aquila Alpine Battalion, part of the 3rd Alpine Division "Julia." He was seriously wounded during that campaign. Once he recovered from his wound, Fatuzzo returned to active duty in the Italian army. However, when Germany occupied Italy during the Second World War, he joined the resistance for the remainder of the war. As an author, General Fatuzzo wrote and published a number of articles and books. As described above, he published his first book, a novel (Due anime nel sole: romanzo coloniale), early in his military career-when he was a Lieutenant stationed in Libya, then an Italian colony. In 1970 his non-fiction book chronicling his own devastating war experiences in Italy's 1940 campaign against Greece, Storia della "Julia" nella Campagna di grecia, was published in Italy and became an award winning, bestseller. General Fatuzzo died in Albisola Marina, Italy in 1975.
