Print on Demand. This book is a captivating historical fiction that follows the fortunes of the Greystoke family, a once-wealthy clan who have fallen on hard times. The main focus of the story is Marian, a young woman who is trapped in an unhappy life and yearns for adventure. Inspired by the diaries of her scandalous ancestor, Louis the Papist, Marian embarks on a quest to escape her stifling home and discover the world. The author explores themes of identity, freedom, and the complexities of family through Marian's journey. She critiques the Victorian-era social and religious constraints that stifled women and the poor in 19th-century England. Ultimately, this book offers insights into the changing nature of society, the importance of self-discovery, and the timeless search for a place to belong. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

A vivid tale of art, ambition, and the price of freedom in a troubled Victorian world.
In a quiet English village, a young woman named Marian Greystoke wrestles with longing, duty, and the pull of a hidden life beyond the parsonage walls. As she and her sisters face financial hardship and social expectations, a visionary musician confronts powerful forces that want to control creativity itself. The drama pools around the abbey, the stage, and the promises made to art—and to money.
Across a web of relationships—between a charming but elusive cousin, a devoted husband, and a circle of patrons—the book probes how art survives when commerce encroaches. It tastes of longing, guilt, and the stubborn hope that true beauty can still be lived, not merely sold.
- Follow Marian’s interior reflections as she questions a future built on sacrifice and restraint.
- Meet Gerard, a gifted composer who yearns for artistic freedom rather than profit.
- Experience social tension around money, class, and artistic integrity in a richly drawn setting.
- Witness debates about the role of art, the worth of tradition, and the lure of new forms of expression.
Ideal for readers drawn to historical fiction that centers on creativity, family dynamics, and the clash between art and commerce.

All Forgotten Books titles are printed on demand. The moment an order is submitted, it is automatically transmitted to our distributor and then forwarded to the printer, where it enters production. This process begins within minutes and is entirely automated.

For this reason, we kindly ask that you double-check the title, edition, and your shipping details before placing an order.
If you change your mind after ordering, you are welcome to return the book once it arrives, and a refund will be issued in accordance with AbeBooks’ return policy.

We can provide digital samples for all our print books ahead, so don't hesitate to reach out.
Returns

If the book is damaged or defective please continue with the return process, and thank you for letting us know so that we can improve our products.
