Item description from seller
(Two Volume Set) A History of Art in Ancient Egypt, from the French of Georges Perrot and Charles Chipiez, translated and edited by Walter Armstrong, published in 1883 by Chapman and Hall, Limited. First English Edition. A monumental nineteenth-century study of the art, architecture, religion, and sacred imagery of ancient Egypt, profusely illustrated with 598 engravings and fourteen steel and colored plates. Perrot and Chipiez examine Egyptian beliefs concerning death and the future life and their profound influence upon art, the religious meaning of divine imagery, tombs and funerary architecture of the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms, temples and sacred spaces, pyramids, palaces, sculpture, painting, decorative arts, and the forms and symbols through which the Egyptians represented gods, kings, the dead, and the unseen world. Particularly valuable for the close relationship it establishes between Egyptian religious belief and material culture, the work provides a richly illustrated nineteenth-century scholarly record of the monuments, objects, funerary practices, and sacred iconography that shaped the early study of Egyptology. Two volumes. Hardcover with gilt-decorated boards. Shelfwear to corners and spine ends with light fading to covers. Old partial previous owners name embossed on title page.…
