The Two Year Spark: How New Hobbies Keep your Brain Young

Why you should read this book
A Personal Note from Dr. Robert M. Gullberg
Why New Hobbies Matter Now More Than Ever after age 40:
If you’re reading this, you’re likely wondering whether trying something new at your stage in life is worth it. Maybe you raised a family of kids and “they were your hobby for years”. Maybe you had a long career and worked hard and never thought about hobbies.
Let me be direct: Yes, it absolutely is worth it. As your physician and someone who’s seen many thousands of patients across decades, I’ve noticed a powerful pattern—those who regularly explore new hobbies age better, think sharper, and feel more alive.
Too many people, especially after age 50, drift into routines after retirement that never change. Routines provide stability, yes—but stagnation steals vitality. The brain needs novelty and challenge to stay young. Without it, mental decline creeps in faster than most realize. I’ve had patients tell me, “I’m too old,” “I don’t have time,” or “I’ve never been creative.” My response? No more excuses. Trudging across the country to see your new grandchildren doesn’t cut it as a new hobby! You can learn something new. You must.
This book isn’t just information—it’s an invitation. Every two years, you should adopt a new hobby--again. Not to pass the time, but to stretch your mind, uplift your mood, spark social connection, and keep your brain from settling into neutral. Whether it’s painting, hiking, cooking, woodworking, or learning the piano, I challenge you to pick something—and start.
Your mind, your health, and your joy depend on it. Let’s get at it.

Warmly,
Robert M. Gullberg, M.D.
