Jacobson first presented his method to reduce muscle activity in 1908 at Harvard University. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is a widely-used procedure that was first developed by Dr. Jacobson in the early 20's. It was the basis for the 'natural childbirth' movement. Becoming increasingly popular in the late 30's through early 50's, the 'relaxation literature of the era is also said to have laid the ground for the reception of meditation in the 60's cultural revolution. Dr. Jacobson published Progressive Relaxation in 1938, detailing this method of relaxation involving alternately tensing and relaxing 14 different muscle groups. He wrote 13 books and more than 100 articles. His book ''Progressive Relaxation,'' published in 1929, is still in print. ''You Must Relax,'' written in 1934, became a best-seller and was translated into 13 languages. Basis for Natural Childbirth. His book ''How to Relax and Have Your Baby'' was published in 1959.
