Roy Flannagan had a varied career as a journalist, author, political advisor and army officer. He developed a correspondence with Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Caldwell, Clifford Dowdey, Douglas Southall Freeman, William Faulkner, and Margaret Mitchell. This letter is dated one month after his split with Milton Avant "Ab" Abernethy over ownership of "Contempo: A Review of Books and Personalities." "I wrote Caldwell, and, I think, Faulkner, but haven't heard from them yet.The same mass psychology is involved at Scottsboro. I have grown to distrust the Negro Publicists more than any other kind of crusading scribblers, but in most cases, God Knows, the Negro gets a deal too dirty for newspaper publicaiton. The recent Texas lynching, like every lynching I ever investigated, was a family murder, not a mob affair. Thos Scottsboro blacks are not being punished justly according to any civilized standards, but Alabama, not New York, matter, unfortunately embraces social problems rather than abstract horribly ironic realities of White Supremacy.
