The U.S. Army's youngest major general when he attained that rank in 1925, this controversial officer was named Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army in 1930; during World War Two he became commander of the U.S. Army Forces in the Far East and then Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area; he officially accepted Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945 aboard the U.S.S. Missouri; during the Korean War President Truman removed him from the United Nations Command in 1951. TNS, 1p, 8" X 10", New York, NY, 1953 February 6. Addressed to Joseph C. Chase. Very good. Bold full signature in black ink at the close. Accompanied by a fine glossy 6¼" X 7 3/4" black and white news agency photograph (International News Photos), a candid closeup of MacArthur in civilian garb -- overcoat, silk scarf, hat. Caption at bottom dates it 25 January 1955 and describes the scene as "A striking closeup of General Douglas MacArthur just before he flew from New York today to celebrate his 75th birthday in Los Angeles tomorrow. California dignitaries and a million plain citizens are expected to greet the famous soldier, who is making his first visit to the city in 18 years. Part of the birthday celebration will be the unveiling of a monument in the general's honor at MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles." A nice letter with appropriate image. Seller Inventory # 40780

Printed text (neatly affixed to verso) titles the scene "Lindy and Anne Guests of Secretary of War" and dated 10 March 1934, it describes this group scene: Colonel Lindbergh was invited to Washington by Secretary of War, George Dern, to discuss Army aviation, the conference was still in progress behind closed doors at noon, but it was 'recessed' for luncheon at the home of Secretary Dern, with Mrs. Lindbergh accompanying her husband to meet Mrs. Dern." Oscar-winning actress (for "The Razor's Edge," 1946) who starred in "All About Eve," "The Ten Commandments" and numerous other films. TNS, oddly-trimmed (roughly rectangular) 4½" X 2", n.p., n.y. Very good. Three small tape stains at edges (one slightly touching "A" of signature). Intriguingly odd: Baxter types what's apparently a favorite verse -- "I don't mind eels / Except as meals. / -- Ogden Nash / Selected by" whereupon she pens an exclamation mark to this last word and signs large and bold beneath in black ink. Undated, but circa 1960. Accompanied by a fine, glossy head-and-shoulders 8" X 10" photograph -- printed caption on verso describes this 1969 still as from the television movie special and pilot episode of "Marcus Welby, M.D." titled "A Matter of Humanities," in which she portrayed the doctor's "long time friend and romantic interest" Myra Sherwood. Pictured at a State Department meeting are. Ivan Matteo Lombardo, heading the Italian Delegation and Willard L. Thorp, Asst. Secretary of State for the U.S." Near fine, dated in caption "6/17/47."
