1 p. 4to. An engaged response from the British novelist attributing the traits of his success to his mother, the famous Victorian novelist, Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Reading in part: "…I think it is possible that any success I may have achieved in the realm of letters is primarily due to an ability to concentrate, a power which I feel I inherited largely from my mother…" William Babington Maxwell (1866-1938) was the son of Irish publisher, John Maxwell, and novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Maxwell wrote and published over 40 works, many of which, such as his 1904 novel, The Ragged Messenger, were turned into plays and films. As a high school student, Seymour Halpern (1913-1997), wrote letters to many notables of the day including politicians, military officers, entertainers, diplomats, artists, activists, writers, and businessmen, inquiring about their ideas to the keys to success in life. Halpern would later go on to serve as Republican from New York to the 86th, 87th, 88th, 89th, 90th, 91st and 92nd United States Congresses, holding office from January 3, 1959, to January 3, 1973.
