La méthode le la "typologie" - science d'observation - et la notion de "type" - empreinte subie - permettent à l'auteur de parvenir à des conclusions sur les catégories intellectuelles et sentimentales du genre humain. Elle se base sur l'observation, quasi-physiognomoniste, des caractères anatomiques, et sur les manifestations inconscientes (sommeil, rêve, ivresse) des individus, qui mettraient à nu leurs "facultés natives". Céline Bessonnet-Favre (1858-1920), officier d'instruction publique et membre de la Société de sociologie de Paris, était la fille de l'Hermétiste Henri Favre. Elle était l'une des grandes animatrices du Hiéron du Val-d'Or, dite la "Franc Maçonnerie d'Occident", société secrète ésotérique catholique fondée à Paray-le-Monial, bercée de concepts royalistes et vouée à ériger une franc-maçonnerie hermétique catholique opposée à celle, anticléricale, du Grand-Orient.
