In an essay included here, Marc Freidus defines typology as "a collection of members of a common class or type." This book accompanies an exhibition of this photographic genre by the Newport Harbor Art Museum. Beginning with the familiar 1962 photographs of gas stations on Route 66 by Ed Ruscha, it moves to photographs of factories and blast furnaces by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Roger Mertin's Christmastime interiors and apple trees in winter, Judy Fishkin's flat and square views of 1950s California house facades, and (most appealing) Lynne Cohen's photographs of target ranges show the potentially unlimited variety of subjects that can and could be treated in typologies. The images here are repetitive, technically excellent, and much enhanced by the analytical and appreciative text. Recommended for academic, museum, and public libraries.
