A visually ambitious reimagining of Snyder's 2017 bestseller, presenting his twenty lessons on the historical mechanisms of authoritarianism through Nora Krug's distinctive combination of drawing, watercolor, collage, archival photography, ephemera, typography, and found imagery. Rather than simply illustrating Snyder's original text, Krug constructs a visual historical narrative around it, juxtaposing documentary material from twentieth-century Europe with contemporary references. The graphic edition was published October 5, 2021, and comprises 128 pages. Penguin Random House identifies it as a graphic adaptation of Snyder's original work, while the copyright page states that the earlier text was "originally published in paperback in different form" in 2017.

Condition: Near Fine. An exceptionally clean, attractive copy with a tight, square binding and clean, bright illustrated pages. The wrappers retain strong color with only very light handling/shelf wear visible, principally minute edge/corner wear; no ownership markings. Bumped area to top edge. Interior crisp and unmarked. Original rear-cover barcode and price present. No dust jacket, as issued in this trade-paperback format.
Nora Krug is especially important to the collectability of this edition: this is not merely an illustrated reprint. Her mixed-media treatment combines watercolor, pencil, crayon, paper collage, photography, and digital work, and the Society of Illustrators awarded On Tyranny a Gold Medal in its Book category. The project also received a Silver Cube in the 2022 ADC Annual Awards, the book was named a New York Times Best Graphic Novel of 2021 and Editor's Choice.

He currently holds the Temerty Chair in Modern European History at the University of Toronto and is a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.
Nora Krug is a German-American illustrator, author, and visual storyteller whose work frequently explores history, memory, national identity, and personal responsibility. She is an associate professor of illustration at Parsons School of Design.
