About this Item

Description:

Chernivtsy: [Revolutionary Ukrainian Party], 1902?1903. Octavo (24.5 × 17 cm). Contemporary quarter-cloth over boards; ca. 15?32 pp per issue. Stamps of the Ukrainian-Canadian Institute in Winnipeg, a later-disbanded diaspora organization. Boards slightly scuffed and detaching from spine; text lightly toned due to stock; Internally very good. A near-complete run of the first publication of the Revolutionary Ukrainian Party (RUP). Established in 1900, RUP was the first party to fight for Ukrainian independence in the Russian Empire. Initially advocating revolutionary nationalism, by 1902 the party had moved toward agrarian Marxism, and started collaborating with other Marxist parties such as the Jewish Workers? Bund, the Russian Socialist Revolutionary Party, and the Polish Socialist Party. Published in 1902?1903, Haslo was the first monthly publication of RUP, disseminating the party program, as well as translations of Liebknecht, Babel, and the first articles about Marx in Ukrainian. For censorship reasons, Haslo was printed in Chernivtsy, which was on Austro-Hungarian territory, and smuggled to the Ukrainian community in the Russian Empire. The present volume contains all fifteen issues published in Chernivtsy, with two more issues printed in Lviv before the journal ceased publication. The volume also contains two versions (censored and uncensored) of the first issue of the journal. Haslo was a precursor to Selianyn (1903?1906), also published in Chernivtsy by Lev Kohut (1878?1947). A journalist, publisher, and political leader, Kohut would go on to serve as the vice-president of the UNP in 1927?1938. As of June 2024, KVK, OCLC show one issue (no. 2) at Basel and one issue (no. 4) at BnF. Seller Inventory # 54309
