In the summer of 1983, Maggie Roberts craves a life unburdened by the responsibility of her younger brother, Nick. But when her distraction allows an undertow to pull him into the Oregon surf, a near-tragedy reshapes the family. As a consequence, Maggie is assigned as Nick's mandatory caregiver for the season.

Maggie soon discovers Nick is not the burden she imagined, especially as he immerses himself in a collection of painted sand dollars he believes hold a special power. This small project offers a sense of hope as the Roberts family confronts financial strain and the sudden loss of their father in the wake of a tsunami that devastates their town.

The Magic of Sand Dollars is a poignant study of sisterly love and the weight of grief. Perkins delivers a moving portrait of a family determined to heal, reminding us that purpose is often found in the most unassuming places and that the connections we need are often the ones closest to home.
