The Ultraviolet Universe at Low and High Redshift

This volume covers the cosmic evolution of galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM). The primary focus is on emission and absorption properties in the restframe ultraviolet. This is because the most distant and primeval galaxies are most readily observed at ultraviolet wavelengths that have been redshifted into the visible- infrared spectrum. By comparing the UV properties of the red-shift counterparts, contributors explore a wide range of scenarios for the evolution of galaxies and the IGM over cosmic time. These include morphological evolution and its wavelength dependence; spectral evolution and the underlying effects of varying stellar populations, metal abundances, dust properties, and nuclear energetics; luminosity evolution and the corresponding histories of starbirth/starburst activity; and number density evolution.
