“Uncle Bud” Robinson: Enduring Lessons from an Early Twentieth-century Simple Folk Preacher

Reuben V. “Uncle Bud” Robinson rose from a moonshiner’s son in rural Tennessee to become the most beloved voice of the early twentieth‑century Holiness movement. Converted under a circuit‑riding preacher while working as a Texas ranch hand, Robinson’s wit, warmth, and unmistakable storytelling earned him the nickname “the Mark Twain of the Holiness movement” and, at the height of his ministry, the reputation of being “the most popular man in America.” This book explores how a man who began with nothing came to embody a major stream of American Christianity. It shows how his preaching united rich and poor, educated and uneducated, rural and urban audiences—and what his unifying communication offers pastors and Christians navigating today’s divided religious landscape.
