Uncomfortable Truth: Faith, Failure, Redemption, One Hard Truth at a Time

He was leading worship on Sunday mornings with a thermos of vodka in his hand—smiling on the outside, crumbling on the inside.

Uncomfortable Truth is a raw, redemptive memoir of faith, failure, and second chances. Raised in the Church of Christ in small-town West Texas, Steven M. Bell grew up with a God of rules, not grace. Beneath the surface: family trauma, shame, and a growing disconnect between the life he was living and the truth he couldn’t escape.

Music became his lifeline. As a worship leader and frontman for a Christian rock band, Steven chased freedom and belonging, caught between spiritual awakening and unresolved pain. What started as passion slowly unraveled into addiction, detachment, and a double life.

His breaking point came through a haunted house, the near collapse of his marriage, and a surprising theological journey that carried him from Protestant praise stages to kneeling in a Catholic chapel. In a 30-day rehab that became more of a spiritual retreat than a recovery facility, he encountered grace where he least expected it—and the God who had been pursuing him all along.

Told with honesty and hope, Uncomfortable Truth isn’t just a story of recovery. It’s a story of rebirth.

If you’ve ever wrestled with faith, addiction, or redemption, this story is for you.
