Uncommon Grounds: New Media and Critical Practice in North Africa and the Middle East addresses the question: with hindsight, what considerations do we now need to take into account when we examine the prominent role that 'new media' has come to play in artistic practices, activism and as a tool for social change in the Middle East and North Africa today?
Anthony Downey is Director of the Masters Programme in Contemporary Art at Sotheby's Institute of Art. He holds a PhD from Goldsmiths College and sits on the editorial board of Third Tex t, is the Editor of Ibraaz, (www.ibraaz.org) and is a Consulting Editor for Open Space (Vienna). He is an Advisory Board member for the Kamel Lazaar Foundation, a trustee of the Maryam and Edward Eisler Foundation, an Advisory Committee member of the The Art and Patronage in the Middle East Summit and sits on the Advisory Board of Counterparts, a forum on migration and the arts. He is the Chairperson of the Judges for the 2013 Magic of Persia Prize (MOP CAP) to be held in Dubai.
