A decision comes up on a Tuesday, and you watch it move past your office to the person who ran the company for thirty years. Your title may already be official, or the handoff may be close enough that everyone feels it. Either way, responsibility is moving toward you, and authority is not.

Taking over a family business is not a normal transition to CEO. The person whose authority you must replace may also be your parent, the founder, and the leader everyone has followed for decades.

Most advice about succession is written for the generation letting go or the advisors managing the transition.

The Uncrowned CEO is written for the successor.

It is for the first-time CEO or next-generation family business leader who has been given the seat, is preparing to take it, or is still trying to determine whether the role is truly theirs. Whether you inherited the family business suddenly or spent years preparing to lead it, the transition asks you to establish authority without losing yourself inside the family legacy.

Executive coach Dr. Benjamin Ritter has spent more than fifteen years working with CEOs, founders, and next-generation leaders navigating succession, authority, identity, and the complicated reality of leading a family business.

Inside, you will learn:

• Why the three-generation “curse” does not hold up, and how fear of it can become more damaging than the myth itself
• What successors are actually afraid of and what those fears reveal
• How to lead when the founder has not fully stepped back
• How to navigate having a parent who is also your boss
• How to disagree about the business without damaging the family relationship
• How to earn authority with employees who remember an earlier version of you
• How to stop leading in reaction to your predecessor and start leading in your own way
• How to build the Clarity, Confidence, and Control required to make the role yours
• How to decide whether you truly want the seat instead of waiting to feel ready

This is not a book about preserving the family business at all costs. It is about becoming the leader the business now needs while deciding what kind of relationship you want with the company, your family, and the legacy you inherited.

A title is not a crown. Take the seat. Make it yours.
