Under the Red and Gold: Being Notes and Recollections of the Siege of Baler

At the far edge of empire, a tiny detachment holds the line while the world changes. Spain's red and gold still flies, though news arrives late. Ninety men, three hundred days. In Under the Red and Gold, Captain Don Saturnino Martin Cerezo records a military memoir and diary of the siege of Baler, written with the urgency of a dispatch and the intimacy of a notebook. Cut off from command, a Spanish colonial garrison in coastal Luzon weighs rumours, rations, and honour, as the Philippine Revolution reshapes the islands. Part spanish war memoir, part philippine revolution account, this firsthand siege narrative belongs among the essential Spanish-American War memoirs and the most vivid witnesses to Philippines 1898-1899. Martin Cerezo writes not as a distant strategist but as an officer living the daily arithmetic of duty, fear, and morale. His tone is practical, unsentimental, and human. For readers of Spanish East Indies history and colonial Philippines military history, it stands as a military history primary source with immediacy; for collectors of classic campaigns and empire at its limits, it offers a defining record of how men endure when certainty collapses. A gripping read for audiences, and a cornerstone for specialist shelves. It is also well suited to those assembling an annotated edition for study from original voices. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today -- a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
