Dr. David Granstrom, DVM, Ph.D., is considered the foremost authority on the subject of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM). While at the University of Kentucky, Granstrom developed the first test able to detect the presence of the parasite that causes EPM and oversaw further advancements in the diagnosis of the disease. He has written book chapters on EPM, and his articles on the subject have appeared in numerous veterinary journals.
Granstrom has a degree in veterinary medicine and a PhD in parasitology from Kansas State University. He began his career in 1978 with a private veterinary practice in Laurie, Missouri, taught at Kansas State, then joined the University of Kentucky in 1988, first as an assistant then an associate professor. Since May of 1997, Granstrom has been assistant director of education and research for the American Veterinary Medical Association.
