A seminal book and AI system based on his MIT research. It detailed SHRDLU, a landmark program that used a simulated "blocks world" to show that computers can grasp English by integrating syntax, semantics, and real-world context. He wrote SHRDLU as a PhD thesis at MIT in the years from 196870. In making the program Winograd was concerned with the problem of providing a computer with sufficient "understanding" to be able to use natural language. Winograd built a blocks world, restricting the program's intellectual world to a simulated "world of toy blocks". In 1973, Winograd moved to Stanford University and developed an AI-based framework for understanding natural language which was to give rise to a series of books. Dust jacket not price-clipped (£5.00 net), protected in removable transparency. Some soiling closed tiny tears to the dust wrapper. 6¼" - 9¼".
