Understanding Sexual Identity: A Book for Gay and Lesbian Teens and Their Friends

Presents the facts in question and answer format about gays and gay relationships, and what it means to a teenager who is attempting to understand his or her own gay identity

Grade 8-12-- Few titles address the concerns and fears of YAs grappling with questions surrounding their own sexual identity. This is a simple, compassionate, and factual starting point for gay teens and the people who care about them. Rench's tone is warm and accepting as she explains what it means to be gay. She discusses homosexuality and religious beliefs, offers some considerations and guidelines for "coming out," and outlines some crucial factors gay YAs need to consider before becoming sexually active. A bibliography and a helpful list of national support groups are included. Although this is not an in-depth study, it will begin to fill in a shameful gap in most YA collections. --Doris A.
