Reviews
Designed for the American reader unfamiliar with Shakespeare's England, this book provides information on such wide-ranging topics as degree and rank, money, life in London and the countryside, marriage customs and the role of women, witches and criminals, and even cuckoldry. Nearly every facet of Elizabethan life is explored in a straightforward and often amusing manner. Although McMurtry offers little new material, she skillfully integrates her explanations with the poetry and drama of the era, clarifying points of possible confusion. This carefully researched work would be useful as a high school or college text or for anyone wanting to know the basic facts about Elizabethan England.
