The year is 1880, Jules Bastien Lepage; an acclaimed French portraitist is in London for the summer. There he encounters the leading theatrical celebrities, including Henry Irving. The artist's obsession to finishing a painting of Irving despite the actor's reluctance creates an enduring unfinished masterwork. Today the unfinished portrait is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Inspired by seeing the painting during a visit to London in 2012, the novel brings to life many of the leading personalities of the time. The actors Sarah Bernhardt, Ellen Terry and Henry Irving, the artists Jules Bastien-Lepage, Laurence Alma Tadema and the author Bram Stoker are the main characters.
The book is the second of a series of novels that dramatise the life of Jules Bastien-Lepage.
