About the Author

The authors are professors of geogeraphy at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro D. Gordon Bennett: Dr. Bennett's research interests include population patterns, trends, and migration. Among his books are The U.S. and Canada, Tension Areas of the World, World Population Problems, Applied Human Geography, and Snapshots of the Carolinas. Professor Bennett has published articles in both books and journals, including Land Economics, Southeastern Geographer, Journal of Applied Gerontology, Geographical Survey, Geographical Survey, Geographical Perspectives, Zero Population Growth, and The North Carolina Atlas. Jeffery C. Patton:Dr. Patton has been published in a variety of journals, including The Annals of the Association of American Geographers, The Cartographic Journal, Cartographic Perspectives, and Cartography and Geographic Information Systems. His research has focused on cognitive mapping, scientific visualization, and geographic education, particularly studying maps as communication devices. Dr. Patton has co-authored a book on the geography of North America and published several hundred maps. He has been involved in archaeological investigations mapping the island of Mochlos and the surrounding sea floor. Current research has focused on 19th century mapping, including American school atlases and urban panoramic maps. His research has been sponsored by grants from UNCG, the National Geographic Society, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Syngenta Corporation.
