This is a world gazetteer, and is is this edition has a "new appendix with 10,000 small towns, villages, rivers of the U. S. & cities villages, & counties of Texas, Mexico and California." As an indication of the state of the union in 1846 when this book was published, the author states that Texas was "a Republic of the United States," and "San Antonio, population perhaps 1,500;" neither Los Angeles or San Francisco are worthy of mention. Contains a HAND-COLORED FOLDING MAP in the rear of the United States "Exhibiting its Canals and Railroads" which is torn at a fold when it was carelessly refolded. It depicts what are now our eastern states from Louisiana north along the Mississippi River. This book has a black leather spine with gilt spine lettering and rules over brown cloth covered boards. There is a small tear to the top of spine and the covers are rubbed. There is an old owner name in old ink on the end paper, tanning to text blocks and a bit of scattered foxing to some pages.
