This is a later printing of the second edition, which was first published in 1853. His father was an Episcopalian and his mother a Congregationalist, both sincere church members. Apart from the common schools, Everett's only education was personal study under the direction of the Rev. Stephen R. Smith, a prominent Universalist clergyman, then of Clinton, NY. He was remembered as an athletic man who enjoyed physical sports, as a debater, as one with a fair, respectful, and gentlemanly manner.
