Add to basketArchimède Pouchet, a French naturalist and microbiologist, is best known for his belief that microorganisms could arise from non-living matter (spontaneous generation) under certain conditions. His book, The Universe, an encyclopedia of sorts, explores various topics including the animal kingdom, the vegetable kingdom, geology and the sidereal universe. He devotes a great deal of the book to the origins of the cosmos, Earth s formation and the development of life, advocating for his views on spontaneous generation while suggesting that science and religion can coexist. Pouchet s views on spontaneous generation were challenged by Louise Pasteur, who provided strong evidence for germ theory, arguing that microorganisms come from existing germs in the environment. In response to a French Academy of Sciences competition on spontaneous generation, Pasteur conducted experiments to disprove Pouchet s claims. His findings were considered more credible by the Academy, leading Pouchet to withdraw from the competition and Pasteur receiving recognition for his work. 8vo, bound in original decorative boards with partially gilt design. 744 pp., including 272 engravings and additional pages dedicated to the Preface, Table of Contents, List of Engravings and Index. Bumping and wear at corners and head and tail of spine. Some small soil spots on both boards. Foxing on first several pages and sporadically on a few other pages of the textblock. Pages are toned. Lovely engravings throughout. Overall, in Very Good condition.
