Synopsis

This book is an extensive study of the University of Cambridge from its earliest origins in the 13th century to the era of the Reformation. The author traces the university's development, contrasting its deep theological roots with the growth of the humanist movement, which would have a profound impact on its character and direction. The author explores the university's complex relationship with the city of Cambridge and the broader intellectual and cultural landscape of Europe, providing a rich and detailed account of a pivotal era in the university's history and of the wider forces at play in this transformative period of Western history.
