The University of Kansas Science Bulletin, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Scientific findings from a mid-century radiation study

A detailed report on how small, repeated doses of radium chloride given to mother rats affect the spleen and blood of their nursing offspring. The study uses quantitative cell analysis and blood counts to track changes over time.

This edition presents methods, results, and discussion from the University of Kansas Science Bulletin, focusing on the cellular and physiological effects of internal radiation. It offers insight into how radiation interacts with developing organisms and the body’s response over several weeks.

• Abstract and purpose: what the researchers aimed to learn about internal radiation and the general adaptation of young rats
• Experimental design: how mothers were treated, nursing dynamics, and when animals were sacrificed for study
• Key findings: changes in spleen cell populations, macrophage activity, erythrocyte damage, and blood cell counts
• Data presentation: tables and graphs explaining body weight, radium retention, and blood chemistry

Ideal for readers of historical radiobiology, veterinary science, and research methods in physiology.
