About this Item

27x38 cm. Uncolored lithograph on stiff paper, three corners chipped, light water stains at bottom, otherwise very good. This illustration features a fireman handing a child back to its mother, a female warrior standing as a guardian next to a fire engine wheel, and a girl giving aid to an injured man whose fireman's hat and horn appear to be lying near him. In the background is a building identified as the Brooklyn City Mills. There is also a park with a large statue (a cemetery?) in the background at the right. Brooklyn City Mills, located near Fulton Ferry in what is now Brooklyn Bridge Park, burned down in 1864. The word "Aid" and the letters Volu (beginning of the word Volunteer?) are on the pedestal on which the female warrior stands. The style is reminiscent of F. O. C. Darley and could be his work, but there are no engraving or other publication credits.
