The Unwelcome

Some loves are too strong to be broken by death. But some doors, once opened, invite something far worse than grief inside.

Fourteen years ago, Melanie met Jason-a tall paramedic with steady green eyes, six years of Navy Corpsman discipline under his belt, and a quiet humor that grounded her world. Together in a comfortable Detroit suburb, they built a home filled with simple routines, practical jokes, a rescued golden retriever named Cooper, and the comfortable warmth of a shared future.

Then came an ordinary winter morning. A minor, petty fight in the kitchen. Unspoken apologies left hanging in the air. Minutes later, on a slick patch of highway, Jason's truck spun out of control. In an instant, their life together was shattered.

Instead of finding peace, Jason awakens in "The Gray"-a shifting, colorless landscape filled with lost, wandering souls who have forgotten their names, their lives, and their purpose. For ten years, time holds no meaning.

Until a sudden, impossible scent of jasmine and vanilla breaks through the mist.

Drawn like a lifeline back to the mortal world, Jason finds Melanie. He watches her navigate the silent rooms of their home, grieving, lonely, and trying to move on. Bound to her as an invisible shadow, Jason realizes he can feel her pain-and that he isn't entirely powerless. He can nudge a picture frame, trigger a sudden draft, or press down on a brake pedal in a moment of mortal danger. But he cannot hold her. And he cannot make her hear his voice.

Desperate for a sign that Jason is still out there, Melanie's years of grief lead her down a dangerous path. When a skeptical attempt at a séance using an old, estate-sale Ouija board goes horribly wrong, something responds through the planchette-something furious, ancient, and hungry.

The ritual doesn't just forge a connection; it shatters the barrier between worlds. A towering, scorched entity surges into Melanie's home, coiling around her life and trapping Jason in a violent, shadow-bound prison within his own former walls.

As cold spots drop the temperature, items fly across rooms, and the family pets cower in terror, Melanie realizes that her sanctuary has become a hunting ground. But she thinks the signs are from Jason.

Imprisoned in the dark and stripped of his voice, Jason must fight against the malevolent force threatening to consume Melanie's mind and home. He proved in life that he moves toward a crisis, not away from it-and in death, he will risk everything to protect the woman he promised never to leave.

Rich with deep emotional resonance, atmospheric dread, and tender nostalgia, Nancy Bachus's The Unwelcome is a gripping exploration of grief, the enduring power of memory, and the terrifying realities of the unseen world.
