The Upstream Solution: Why Nothing You've Tried Has Worked-and What Will

We're treating mental health backwards. Billions are poured into downstream fixes—fitness, nutrition, therapy, medication, mindfulness apps—yet the crisis keeps getting worse.

Why? Because we're skimming rubbish off the surface whilst the pollution keeps pouring in from upstream.

The source is mentality—the way you think, feel, and respond to life. Until we fix that first, nothing else holds.

Most people don't own their mentality. They're living scripts written by others, performing versions of themselves they don't recognise, carrying beliefs that were never theirs to begin with.

And it's slowly killing them.

The solution isn't another ideology or belief system. It's mental sovereignty—the ability to think for yourself, feel for yourself, and choose for yourself so you can finally reclaim your life.

The Upstream Solution gives you the foundational, upstream work that makes everything downstream actually hold. Built on lived experience—grief, loss, faith, and business—it shows you what truly creates lasting change.

For anyone who's tried everything and still feels stuck.

For men hiding behind the masculine barrier.

For people exhausted by wellness culture that never delivers.

This is the upstream work that does.

Brendan Mullan is a mental sovereignty advocate, author, and founder of Starcoz, a construction business consultancy. After losing his father at twenty-one, Brendan spent years pursuing every downstream solution available-fitness, coaching, meditation, self-help. When his brother died eighteen years later, it became clear that none of it truly held until he reclaimed hismentality. From that hard-won clarity came the principle that underpins his work today: Fix the upstream source, not the downstreamsymptoms.Today, Brendan works with construction business owners through his STARS framework-where mentality is the first step-helping them build businesses that work without consuming their lives. He believes the mental health crisis is not a failure of solutions, but a failure of sequence-and that lasting change begins withmental sovereignty. The Upstream Solution is his first book.Brendan lives in Galway, Ireland.Connect with Brendan: www.starcoz.com
