Urban Growth and Development in Asia Vol. II : Living in the Cities

The editors (geographers from Lancaster U., U. of Akron, and the School of Oriental and African Studies) present 31 articles drawn from the Fifth Asian Urbanization Conference in London, Aug. 1997. The articles focus upon the activities and people in Asian cities, rather than on urban structures (which was the province of the preceding volume). The papers are organized into sections on urban systems; gender, access, and environment; migration; government and institutions; and observing the city. Particular topics include the impact of tourism in Madras, India; a comparison of livelihood strategies in Taiwan and the Philippines; and nongovernmental organizations relationships with government in Bombay.
