The second edition of philosopher and economist John Stuart Mill's enormously influential and important classic exposition and defence of Utilitarianism. The second edition of this work, which was first published the year prior. The essay explains utilitarianism to its readers and addresses the criticisms levelled against the philosophy. The work has been termed 'the most influential philosophical articulation of a liberal humanistic morality that was produced in the nineteenth century' by J. B. Schneewind. With a July 1865 publisher's catalogue to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping and minor losses of cloth to back strip head and tail. Rear joint head starting, with board firmly held. Light tidemarks to front endpapers. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound, but with contents leaf detached and loosely inserted. Pages clean and bright, if a touch age toned to perimeters. Good.
