The Utility of Classical Studies: An Address (Classic Reprint)

Unlock the value of the classics for a modern mind.

The book presents a compelling address on why ancient Greek and Roman writings, paired with Christian scripture, should shape a well-rounded education and a sturdy character.

In clear, accessible prose, it argues that a utilitarian age still benefits greatly from literature, history, poetry, and philosophy. It shows how classical learning can deepen taste, sharpen judgment, and nurture civic virtue across professions—from the soldier to the merchant to the scholar.

• Reasons to study classical literature beyond mere facts, including imagination, moral insight, and cultural literacy.
• Arguments for reading original languages to fully grasp style, rhetoric, and historical context.
• Examples of how ancient wisdom intersects with modern life and national identity.
• Guidance on how to approach education with virtue, patriotism, and faith as core aims.

Ideal for readers of classical philosophy, education history, and anyone curious about how the humanities shape character and society.
