A third edition of this collection of letters from Robert Louis Stevenson to Sidney Colvin. Colvin became Stevenson's literary adviser, and after Stevenson's death he became the first editor of Stevenson's letters. Illustrated with tissue-guarded black and white frontispiece showing "Portrait of R. L. Stevenson; etched by W. Strang after a photograph by Falk of Sydney" and two other photographic portraits of the author on pages 119 and 320, a text-map and musical bar motif in the text. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and borders to the spine. The boards are quite clean, just showing some marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling. Extremities of boards slightly rubbed. Corners of boards slightly creased and rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. No reading lean to the binding. Spine clean and unbrowned. Spine tight. All edges of page block untrimmed (rough-cut, as called for) and slightly foxed, but not affecting interior pages. Internally also very good with a neat period inscription on the front free endpaper: "With Mrs James Fleming's compliments". No creases or tears. No dustwrapper, as issued. ***200mm x 138mm. xx-pages prelims including editorial note plus 366 pages, including Epilogue and Appendix, plus a 48pp Publisher's Catalogue dated July 1901 at the back of the book. ***'My dear Colvin, - This is a hard and interesting and beautiful life that we lead now. Our place is in a deep cleft of Vaea Mountain, some six hundred feet above the sea, embowered in forest, which is our strangling enemy, and which we combat with axes and dollars. I went crazy over outdoor work, and had at last to confine myself to the house, or literature must have gone by the board.''
