Dopo le grandi citt� del Ventesimo secolo, la Berlino poco amata e la Parigi da cui � ambiguamente sedotto, Rainer Maria Rilke sceglie l’incanto di un’isola che rappresenta la quintessenza del Mediterraneo. � anche un modo per sfuggire alle relazioni troppo coinvolgenti con Lou Andreas Salom�, sua compagna a Berlino, e con la moglie Clara Westhoff, allieva di Rodin a Parigi. Cos�, dopo un breve soggiorno napoletano, Rilke arriva a Capri il 4 dicembre 1906, nel giorno del suo trentunesimo compleanno, �e il luogo scelto�, scrive Elisabetta Potthoff nella prefazione a questo nostro volume, �pareva predestinato a fargli ritrovare l’equilibrio della quiete: a Villa Discopoli gli era stata messa a disposizione la Casina delle rose, edificio indipendente che sorge nel giardino della villa e dal quale facilmente si accede sulla via Tragara, da dove scorci improvvisi dischiudono, immensa, la vista del mare�. Il soggiorno si protrae fino al maggio dell’anno successivo (con un ritorno nella primavera del 1908), lasciando in Rilke una profonda traccia, come testimoniato da questa nostra edizione, che raccoglie le prose e le poesie ispirate da questo suo buen retiro caprese, compresi quei testi che a Capri e Napoli sono nati, ma che solo a distanza di tempo hanno poi trovato la loro collocazione nell’opera del grande poeta.
