About this Item
7,9cm x 11,6cm on 8,7cm x 12,8cm photo paper. Fine. Original unpublished colour photo of Victor Lungelo Mayekiso and William Morrow visiting an extra fine electric wire factory near Peking on beginning of August 1966; a Chinese interpreter is between them and they walk front of colour propaganda notice boards. Victor Lungelo Mayekiso served in the Poqo, the military branch of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (South Africa) when it started training recruits militarily from 1964 onwards and then became Chief PAC representative in Cairo, opening the channels for training PAC guerillas in Nasser's Egypt and also in Libya soon after the coup led by Colonel Gaddafi. He married an Egyptian woman. In 1972, he became Deputy Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the PAC, remaining Chief representative in Cairo. He died around 2004-2005. William "Bill" Morrow (1888 or 1891-1980) spent his early life as a railway worker, qualifiying as an engine driver in 1911. Member of Railway Worker's Union, he was Tasmanian Secretary of the Australian Railways Union - ARU (1936-1946) and Senior Vice-President of the ARU from 1937. Outspoken opponent of military conscription, his open criticism of the Tasmanian Labor Government caused his expulsion from the Australian Labor Party, but, reversing his anti-war position following Russia's invasion by Germany, he was readmitted to the Labour Party in 1942 and, later, became Labour Senator (1947-1952). His continued opposition to compulsory national service, to Australia's involvement in Korean war and his calls for Australia's recognition of People's Republic of China caused his final split with the Labor Party in 1953. Thereafter, he stood on his own ticket under the name of Tasmanian Labor Party. He was elected to the World Peace Council Bureau and received the International Lenin Peace Prize in 1961. After his wife's death in 1963, he resigned from official duties but remained an active member of Australia China Friendship Society, until his death.
