Photographs sharp and clear, some with faint offsetting from text. Very good. A handsome photographically-illustrated volume depicting waterfalls around Ithaca. Several of the photographs are signed in the negative by local photographer J.C. Burritt, whose photographs were also featured in other books about the scenery and landscape of the Ithaca region. Crown 8vo (179 x 111mm): 155,[3]pp, with ten mounted captioned photographs and table of measurements of the falls. Publisher's forest green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, covers elaborately paneled in blind, coated chocolate end papers. Book plate of George F. Behringer (the first graduate of Cornell, in 1869) to front paste-down. A superior copy (page edges very lightly tanned), tightly bound and clean throughout, with sharp, unfaded prints. Margolis & Moss 20 (for mention of J. C. Burritt's half-stereo views of scenery around Ithaca). Sabin 13401. Not in Truthful Lens. Clarke, sometimes known as the "Father of Geochemistry," is credited with determining the composition of the Earth's crust. He was a founder of The American Chemical Society and served as its president. Two years after taking a bachelor's degree at Harvard College, in 1867, he was appointed instructor in chemistry at Cornell University, near which these photographs were taken. Some of the prints are signed in the negative by regional photographer J. C. Burritt, whose photographs (more than 100 stereo views) were featured in the series "Scenery About Ithaca." N. B.
